Edward
Gregson’s four movement ‘symphony’
for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra
opens the RNCM Symphony Orchestra’s
annual Bridgewater Hall concert with
a flourish. Exhilarating and moving,
its four movements are Dances of joy,
love, death and life. Messiaen’s
massive ten-movement Turangalîla-Symphonie
for vast orchestra, with solo piano
and ondes martenot, was his first
major international commission, requested
by Serge Koussevitzky for the Boston
Symphony Orchestra. Based on the legend
of Tristan and Isolde, it’s
a joyous and explosive celebration
of love. Packed with everything from
Javanese gamelan, Hindu rhythms and
birdsong melodies to jazzy Gershwin-like
sounds that wouldn’t be out
of place in a Hollywood musical, this
concert is the final instalment in
the RNCM’s season of concerts
to celebrate the centenary of Messiaen’s
birth. «

Irish-born singer-songwriter Christine Tobin is firmly rooted in a tradition that emphasizes storytelling on a musical bedrock that creatively blends blues, folk and jazz. For this show, the opening night of the Manchester Jazz Festival, Christine profiles material from her latest album Secret Life Of A Girl. Asked about the inspiration for this collection of beautiful songs, Tobin pinpoints ‘the idea of “the journey” both in the physical world and in the transformation from youth to maturity.’ « back to top » « close panel » | | | | | book by phone | | rncm | | we recommend | 0161 907 5555

This innovative double-bill brings together two artists from Italy’s Egea Records stable for their UK première. First up is pianist Danilo Rea, whose performance credentials include Chet Baker, Lee Konitz and Phil Woods, in a set of improvisatory interpretations of operatic arias. For the second half, we welcome a trio that combines the warmth of Mediterranean folk melodies and the energy of jazz with virtuosic instrumental techniques. Mirabassi’s trio, playing original repertoire, effortlessly pit moments of uninhibited joy against the most intimate melancholy. « back to top » « close panel » | | | | | book by phone | | rncm | | we recommend | 0161 907 5555

A highlight of the 2008 Manchester Jazz Festival is this presentation of new work by the internationally-renowned guitarist Mike Walker. Commissioned by mjf, Ropes fuses the soundworlds of contemporary classical, jazz and rock’n’roll and showcases the virtuosic clarinet playing of Mike’s long-time musical partner Iain Dixon. With the backdrop of a full 30-piece string orchestra, this concert will be both a spectacle on a scale not often heard in the jazz idiom, and a very rare chance to witness a true fusion of jazz and strings that will explode any pre-conceptions - and your ear-drums. « back to top » « close panel » | | | | | book by phone | | rncm | | we recommend | 0161 907 5555

An Australian singer-songwriter, Robert Forster is best known for his work with songwriting partner Grant McLennan, with whom he co-founded The Go-Betweens. In addition to his work with the Go-Betweens, he has released five solo albums: Danger in the Past, recorded in Berlin in 1990; Calling from a Country Phone, recorded at Sunshine Studios, Brisbane, in 1993 with members of local pop group Custard; I Had a New York Girlfriend, a collection of cover versions recorded in Melbourne in 1994; Warm Nights, recorded in London in 1996 and produced by Edwyn Collins; and "The Evangelist", recorded (all but one track - "A Place to Hide Away") at Good Luck Studios, London, 2007. Critically acclaimed internationally as a songwriter, he reveals a strong literary influence in his work. He became, through his work with McLennan and the Go-Betweens, one of a group of Brisbane musicians who established a particular Brisbane sound characterised by laid-back, jangly arrangements. « back to top » « close panel » | | | | | book by phone | | rncm | | we recommend | 0161 907 5555
