Starring
the much-loved stage and television
actress Felicity Kendal.
What is Mrs Warren’s
profession? Her daughter,
Vivie, has never really known
much about her mother. A prim
young woman, she has enjoyed
a comfortable upbringing,
a Cambridge education, a generous
monthly allowance and now
has ambitions to go into Law.
Is it conceivable that all
this privilege and respectability
has been financed from the
proceeds of the oldest profession?
How will Vivie react when
she finds out the awful truth
about her mother’s ill-gotten
gains? Shaw’s ultimate
test of a mother-daughter
relationship is one of his
most witty and provocative
plays. Written in 1894 but
banned from performance until
the racy 1920s, Mrs Warren’s
Profession lays bare the rampant
hypocrisy of Victorian society
and its constrained morals.
There
is a 2pm matinee on the Wednesday
and Saturday.

As
soon as we leave our homes,
we are told what to do and
more often what not to do.
But these instructions are
not only physical; they have
emotional resonances which
go beyond the literal commands.
In his first work for his
own company since his appointment
as Artistic Director of Sydney
Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela
explores this duality and
how it affects us. He has
collaborated with contemporary
composer Ezio Bosso and designer
Alan Macdonald to develop
the work.

Join
us for an evening of chilling
ghost stories by Charles Dickens
and M. R. James, introduced
by the intrepid Victorian
psychic investigator, Montagu
Furzan. A curious traveller
encounters a lonely, isolated
worker in a dark and dismal
railway cutting. The man appears
strangely troubled; is it
his isolation and the tedium
of his job that is playing
with his mind? Or is there
a presence haunting the gloom
around the danger light and
the black mouth of that oppressive
and forbidding tunnel?

The
nation’s favourite impressionist,
Alistair McGowan (“The
Big Impression”), is
set to embark on his first,
solo, stand-up tour in ten
years. Alistair will take
to the road (and the rails)
this autumn with a brand new,
one-man show resurrecting
his legendary celebrity impressions
and introducing audiences
to a host of new never-before-heard
voices along the way –
nobody does it better! But
Alistair’s stand-up
is about much more than impersonation
– expect sharp observations,
poetry and romance, animals
and surrealism, love and anger,
wordplay and ‘greenery’
as well as footballers and
film stars. No make-up or
costume changes … just
one man, a microphone and
an amazing multitude of voices
– including most importantly,
his own.

Così
fan tutte is one of Mozart’s
most remarkable creations.
It all starts with a casual
bet that the fiancées
of two young men won’t
stay faithful for a minute
if put to the test. It sounds
harmless enough, but cruelty
is inherent in this game and
there are darker forces at
work. This story of trust
and deception, loyalty and
desire, resonates as strongly
today as it did in 1789, and
the score contains some of
Mozart’s most dazzlingly
beautiful music. Conductor
Andrew Parrott. Director Tim
Albery. Sung in English.

This
vibrantly original opera follows
the fantastical adventures
of Mr Broucek as he travels
to worlds far beyond his imagination.
On the moon he encounters
strange, artistic creatures,
after which he is whisked
back in time, finding himself
unwittingly involved in a
15th century Czech battle.
Our hero is rather like an
operatic Mr Benn, although
his adventures seem to start
and end in a beer barrel.
Janácek’s glorious
music paints vivid pictures
of Mr Broucek’s travels,
conjuring unearthly extra-terrestrial
sounds, Puccini-like romantic
duets, and the stirring patriotism
of battle songs. Conductor
Martin André. Director
John Fulljames. Sung in English.

Edgy,
acoustic singer-songwriter
Martyn Joseph has an enviable
high-energy connectivity with
his audience and he’s
never devoid of a touch of
wry, often topical humour.
He darts chameleon-like between
mighty and meek songs, railing
against the broken promise
playground of global leaders,
holding tight to anti-war
anthems, before disarming
for unexpectedly fragile love
songs. His most recent album
Evolved was Mojo`s Folk Album
of the Month on its release,
and when you hear him live,
you’ll understand why.

Observational
comedy, droll storytelling

Peyroux has spent 2009 making

acclaimed third album, Bare

an extension of her previous
work and a bold step into
previously unexplored psychological
terrain; creating a deeply
personal piece of work that

her fascinating life story
- moving from the US to Paris

The
classic story of One Flew
Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
is injected with a large dose
of Hip Hop energy by Bounce.
This exciting company is known
for creating high energy,
imaginative street-dance theatre,
enjoying hit runs at both
Sadler’s Wells and the
Roundhouse. In the confines
of a psychiatric hospital,
breakdance becomes a way of
expressing freedom and rebelling
against the iron rule of Nurse
Ratched, who happens to be
a ballet fan. Based on the
play by Dale Wasserman and
the novel by Ken Kesey, the
show features a fantastic
soundtrack including hits
from Missy Elliot, Dizzie
Rascal, Gotan Project, David
Holmes and Cypress Hill. Inventive
set design, bungee-jumping
breakdancers, film and choreography
combine to produce a fast-paced
show that is at times funny,
at times moving, and always
packed to the rafters with
high-octane dance moves. Suitable
for ages 14+. Contains violence
and scenes of an adult nature.

The
RSC return with a critically
acclaimed and blisteringly
topical play by Roy Williams,
one of the UK’s most
exciting playwrights. Before
they depart for active service,
two young soldiers make the
most of a drunken night out
with friends in an English
market town. Their bravado
is soon crushed by their tour
of duty and the civilian life
they return to is now as alien
to them as the desert they
left behind. Recently reworked
to acknowledge the shifting
mood of a country now witnessing
the withdrawal of troops from
Iraq, this timely and explosive
play examines the aftermath
of a war whose conflicts rage
far beyond the battleground.
Written by award-winning playwright
Roy Williams, whose recent
work includes Angel Face and
Sing Yer Heart Out For The
Lads (National Theatre, London),
Days of Significance is directed
by Maria Aberg, whose other
credits include State of Emergency
(Gate Theatre, London), Crime
and Punishment (National Theatre)
and Alaska (Royal Court, London).
Contains strong language,
violence and some scenes of
an adult nature. «

Christina
and Augustus are the unearthly
proprietors of an absurd gothic
eatery. They guide the audience
through the macabre tale of
a business mogul and his fateful
quest for an heir; serving
up his just deserts. An original
devising by Hocus Pocus Theatre
company, Nightmare Café
is a theatrical feast of dark
comedy, grotesque burlesque,
vaudeville, music, song and
dance.
