Inspired by the fantastic audience response to his deconstruction of song lyrics in his Best Medicine Tour combined with his fascination with the vagaries of the English Language this hilarious new show examines many more situations in life where words really don’t come easy. These include tongue-tied parents explaining the facts of life, ridiculous newspaper stories, magazine poems, pathetic adolescent chat-up lines, weird hospital speak, learning a foreign language and an extended selection of song lyrics that range from the lazy through surreal to the ridiculous. Throw in a Champion the Wonder Horse sing-a-long, Ancient Abyssinian Contraception, Rubbish School Trips, Epidural Anaesthesia and The Last Supper and you have all the ingredients for a rich and spicy comedy casserole; a sort of Lexicon-carne! Music is at the heart of Richard Alston’s dance making, and this programme features music full of glorious contrasts. Terse anger melts suddenly into a sweet lyricism in Even More, which is driven by the sharp contrasts of Prokofiev’s brilliant Sixth Piano Sonata. Overdrive takes up the pulsating rhythm of Californian composer Terry Riley’s music and runs with it to the wire - shifting, changing direction, curving over and under but never pausing for breath. The tightly sprung Lie Of The Land, choreographed by Martin Lawrance, is danced to Ned Rorem’s String Quartet No.4. « back to list » « close panel » | richard alston | | | | 0844 815 4873

I
Am Kloot are set to release their
stunning fifth studio album, ‘Sky
at Night’ on July 5th. Following
2007’s ‘I Am Kloot Play
Moolah Rouge’, the album further
goes to cement John Bramwell’s
status as one of the most talented
songwriters in the country. Proud
Manchester men they may be, but
the record is infused with an almost
Parisian elegance. Tracks like ‘It’s
Just The Night’ and ‘The
Moon Is A Blind Eye’ reveal
a Gainsbourg style of sophistication,
but are still punctuated with their
own inimitable Northern soul. Opening
with the warm, rolling ‘Northern
Skies’, it’s followed
by ‘To The Brink’, a
decadently faded show tune, with
celestial strings balancing delicately
against the kind of poignant musings
more typically found at the bottom
of a brandy glass. The
theatrical instrumentation of ‘Lately’
is lush and impressive, whilst remaining
explicit and honest. Renowned harpist
Marie Lionheardt provides a delicate
accompaniment to the moving narrative
in ‘I Still Do’, while
‘Radiation’ touches
upon the Beatles’ more psychedelic
moments of orchestration. A songwriter’s
songwriter, Bramwell is one of our
finest wordsmiths and counts Pete
Doherty and and Elbow’s Guy
Garvey amongst his many fans. Having
produced their hugely acclaimed
debut album ‘Natural History’
Garvey, alongside bandmate Craig
Potter, has returned to produce
and mix this sublime ten track collection.
With ‘Sky at Night’,
expect Kloot’s cult status
to soar skywards. I Am Kloot are
– John Bramwell (vocals/guitar),
Andrew Hargreaves (drums), Peter
Jobson (bass). «

Thirty years ago the first episode of Yes, Minister was broadcast and went on to become television’s most successful political comedy ever. Along with the equally successful sequel, Yes, Prime Minister, they captured a niche in the political consciousness of the nation. The original writers of these classic series have reunited for this anniversary production and now the Prime Minister Jim Hacker, his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby and his Principal Private Secretary Bernard Woolley are all back, in a brand new play. The world, of course, has turned meanwhile, Spin has become an art form and the BlackBerry is the must-have accessory. Dossiers have been ‘sexed up’, the ‘special relationship’ put to the test and countless MPs have stood down to ‘spend more time with their families’. But great institutions have a way of riding punches and bouncing back unscathed for the next round. Will it prove so for Jim Hacker and his coterie of close advisors? Especially with the country on the brink of financial meltdown and the Government’s only apparent salvation coming from an unlikely quarter – a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. « back to list » « close panel » | yes prime minister | | | | 0844 815 4873

Bizet’s tale of passion, sexual obsession and revenge consistently rates as one of the best loved operas, with ‘Toreador’ recognised worldwide. Celebrated American director Daniel Kramer brings his treatment to Carmen, which has not been seen by Opera North audiences for over ten years. The fiery Carmen, sung by soprano Heather Shipp, acclaimed recently at Opera North in diverse roles Mad Margaret, Ruddigore and Donna, Skin Deep, sparks jealousy and violence around her through her flirtatious and flighty behaviour. Toying with emotions, she leads a merry dance that results in tragedy with the revengeful murder of her lover. American soprano, Sandra Piques Eddy makes her British debut in the Spring, sharing the role of Carmen. Young Lithuanian bass-baritone Kostas Smoriginas also makes his Company debut as Escamillo. For the first time ever, in the spring of 2011, comedy legend and the most senile member of Monty Python will be bringing his "Alimony Tour” to the UK. Best known for his idiosyncratic turns in "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and "Fawlty Towers," John Cleese will bring his unique comedic perspective to audiences across the UK next year. Starting in Cambridge on 3rd May 2011, he will then visit Birmingham, Salford, Liverpool, Oxford and finish in Bristol, on 21st June 2011. Cleese has achieved a lot in his career which started as a sketch writer for BBC Radio’s Dick Emery Show and then The Frost Report. After this stardom beckoned, and Monty Python was created with Cleese co-writing and staring in four series and three films. He went on to achieve further success as the neurotic hotel manager Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, which he co-wrote with then wife Connie Booth. After huge UK success John went on to crack the USA with A Fish Called Wanda (which he wrote and starred in with Jamie Lee Curtis). The late 1990s saw the unstoppable Mr Cleese appear in Bond movie The World is Not Enough and later Die Another Day. From writing to starring in plays, musicals, theatrical and comedy productions, to films and sitcoms, Cleese has done it all, and now it’s time for him to tell you about his jam-packed life. Cleese says "it is an evening of well honed anecdotes, psychoanalytical tit-bits, details of recent surgical procedures, and unprovoked attacks on former colleagues, especially Michael Palin". « back to list » « close panel » | john cleese | | | | 0844 815 4873

What
happens when you put three women
- three critically acclaimed, award-winning
singer-songwriters, three old friends,
three artists with three unique
voices - on a stage together with
some guitars and a bottle of good
cabernet? You get Wine, Women &
Song. The three women in question
are Suzy Bogguss, Gretchen Peters
and Matraca Berg. All CMA winners,
Suzy (Horizon Award), Gretchen (Song
of the Year for "Independence
Day") and Matraca (Song of
the Year for "Strawberry Wine")
are embarking on a 15 date UK tour
in June 2011. The three friends
started talking about taking it
on the road for the first time in
2007 after playing several writers'
nights together in Nashville. Peters,
who has toured the UK extensively,
spoke to her UK booking agent about
the idea and the response was immediate
and overwhelming. That tour led
to their return a year later where
again they wowed audiences up and
down the country and now for 2011
they’re undertaking their
longest tour yet under the title
of “Wine, Women and Song”.
The three women have a long history:
Bogguss has co-written with both
Berg and Peters, and recorded songs
by both. The show is billed as "Wine,
Women & Song: an evening of
song, conversation and laughter
with Suzy Bogguss, Gretchen Peters
and Matraca Berg". Expect plenty
of all three.

As giants, dwarves, gods and goddesses struggle to be the lords of the ring, Wagner’s mammouth music brings concert halls across the north of England to life in Opera North’s most ambitious project yet, Der Ring des Nibelungen. Developing the ‘opera in concert’ series, for which the Company is becoming highly respected, this is the first in the cycle that will be lead by Music Director, Richard Farnes, over the next four years. Bringing a wealth of international talent and prestige to the stage, the cast includes bass-baritone Joachim Seipp, Wolfgang Ablinger and the American mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker. Dame Anne Evans is Britain’s most famous Brunnhilde and is involved in casting, mentoring and taking masterclasses with members of the cast. Performances will take place in concert halls from June – September 2010, including Leeds Town Hall, The Sage Gateshead, The Lowry, Salford Quays and Symphony Hall, Birmingham. « back to list » « close panel » | das rheingold | | | | 0844 815 4873
