BBC Philharmonic & Garrick Ohlsson - Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3
Finnish conductor John Storgårds delves into the great legends mapped out in Sibelius’s mythological Lemminkäinen Suite, inspired by the nineteenth century epic Kalevala – one of the few works that can boast of sculpting Finnish national identity as much as Sibelius himself.
Following this, the only American to have won first prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition, Garrick Ohlsson, leads us into a fifth legend – Rachmaninov’s fiendishly challenging Piano Concerto No. 3, known for being a daunting trial through which only a select few dare to test their mettle. This concerto is nevertheless a wondrous display of Late Romantic melody and colour.
