Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales - Together Again Again

Jinx Monsoon & Major Scales - Contact, Manchester - Friday 6th May 2022

Drag Legend, and Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5, Jinkx Monsoon reunites with Major Scales to bring a comedy fuelled cabaret performance that will leave you howling with laughter.

The show centres around the reunion of the duets’ last performance together 2019’s hit show “The Ginger Snapped”. The two friends who seemingly parted ways reunite in “Together Again, Again!” which takes place roughly 45 years in the future, with Jinkx desperately grasping at the last glimmer of TV stardom and Major who has stepped away from the spotlight all together. Jinkx is now older and more bitter than ever before and this sparks a hilarious back and fourth between the stars as they attempt to mend the past as they take one final shot at fame.

At times, the actual context of the show can seem a little strange, I mean who knew in 45 years time we would be discussing Reptilian Overlords? Yet somehow, it all makes total sense. Jinkx is a master at her craft, there is no doubt about that. The show perfectly encapsulates her kitchy humour and vocal range. Major is able to match Jinkx the entire time with his keyboard and world class improvisation. They make it look far too easy, almost like they’ve been doing it for years. Their chemistry was magical to watch.

The running gag throughout is the constant digs towards “British lingo”. They deliver brilliant one-liners and punchlines time and time again, with the odd mention of the political climate today, which is always something to laugh about, and for the record, we do not call crayons “squiggly drawing sticks”. We also really enjoyed the audience interaction, especially when some brought their dog Coco and we got to hear the iconic “Who would want to top Coco?” line.

The pair perform an array of original songs and musical theatre covers, with a twist of course to keep them fresh and comedic. A little lyric change doesn’t hurt anyone, and they managed to keep the audience laughing throughout. Numbers included “Sunset Boulevard”, “Cabaret” and even a Gorillaz cover. They close out with a beautiful cover of “(You’re) Timeless To Me” which showcases the amazing vocal talents of Jinkx, perfectly accompanied by Majors impressive piano skills.

The show was an absolute delight and the pairs chemistry made for a magical evening, well worth the watch. It appears Jinkx was right, and it truly was and always will be “Monsoon Season”. Catch Jinkx in the upcoming RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 7, where she enters the Hunger Games of all Hunger Games as she goes heel to heel with 7 other past winners where only one can come out alive... metaphorically speaking of course.

WE SCORE JINKX MONSOON & MAJOR SCALES - 9/10
