THE
ZOMBIES and THE YARDBIRDS |
|
| Wednesday
14th May 2008 - 8pm |
| Flying
Music proudly present Rock Legends The Zombies
(Colin Blunstone, Rod Argent, Keith Airey, Jim
Rodford & Steve Rodford) and The Yardbirds
(Chris Dreja, Jim McCarty, Ben King, John Idan
& Billy Boy Miskimmin) in concert. As part
of "The British Invasion" in the 1960s,
following The Beatles in 1964 The Zombies were
the second UK group to score an American #1
hit. The Zombies were uniquely different, with
a subtler style, often jazzier and more inventive
chord structures, the prominent keyboards of
Rod Argent, and the distinctive voice of Colin
Blunstone. She's Not There and Tell Her No were
quick hits, but despite continually stunning
musical output that has influenced other artists
ever since, another hit record was more than
four years away, after they'd broken up! The
band went their separate ways and eventually,
in pieces, the ex-Zombies generated more U.K.
chart action during the 70s than they had as
bandmates in the 60s. Since regrouping in 2001
the richness of The Zombies' entire catalog
been discovered by a whole new generation of
fans. The Yardbirds famed for laying the groundwork
for rock guitar as we know it spawned three
of the greatest rock guitarist of all time:
Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Together
with bandmates Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty they
created hardrock out of standard twelve-bar
blues, doubling the tempos and whacking the
amps up to ten. On the British club scene, The
Yardbirds, along with The Animals and The Rolling
Stones ruled the stages, with performances of
their classic hits For your Love and Heart Full
of Soul . The Yardbirds expanded the range of
the electric guitar, experimenting with feedback,
sustain, and fuzztone. The Yardbirds were the
bridge between the tributary white R&B of
early-sixties London and the pastures of fuzz-toned
psychedelia and power-chorded heavy metal plowed
much later in the decade and throughout the
seventies. (back

| Thursday
19th June 2008 - 7.30pm |
| Singer,
songwriter and pianist Joe Jackson's new release,
Rain reunites him with the rhythm section that
has accompanied him off and on for nearly three
decades: Graham Maby (bass, vocals) and Dave Houghton
(drums, vocals). Despite his early image as a
dapper new-wave rocker in skinny tie and pork-pie
hate, since the '79 release of his debut, Look
Sharp!, he has been an eclectic composer and performer.
From the release of his very first single, "Is
She Really Going Out With Him?" he has explored
reggae, jump-blues, Latin rhythms and classic
Gershwin-style songwriting on hits like "Sunday
Papers," "I'm The Man," "It's
Different For Girls," "Steppin' Out"
and "Breaking Us In Two." He's also
produced several memorable film scores and won
the Best Pop Instrumental Recording Grammy in
2000 for his Symphony No. 1. His 1982 release
Night and Day, the best-selling and most critically
lauded album of his career, Rain is occasionally
melancholy, but boasts plenty of humor, swing,
sophistication, barbed social commentary and even
some punk-like rocking out. (back

K.D.
LANG |
|
| Tuesday
29th July 2008 - 7pm |
| Many
pass themselves off as "proper" singers,
but lang is one of the few who can really, really
sing. Glorious.' The Times echoed, ‘With
the pop world suddenly in thrall to a bevy of
young, female torch singers, here is a star
who really knows the stylistic and emotional
ropes of the genre.' k.d.'s latest album is
the acclaimed bestseller, Watershed, which was
released by Nonesuch Records in January and
saw k.d. achieve some of the best chart success
of her 25-year career, including her highest
ever debut on the US Billboard chart at no.8.
The album comprises 11 new songs written and
produced by k.d., including the first single
‘I Dream Of Spring' and the forthcoming
single ‘Coming Home'. It is the first
album of newly written material from the four-time
Grammy winner since 2000's Invincible Summer,
and her first studio album since 2004's Canadian
songbook, Hymns Of The 49th Parallel. It is
also the first self-produced collection of her
career. The Sunday Times Magazine called it
a ‘masterpiece', and in a four-star review
Q proclaimed it ‘The best thing she's
done since 1992's Ingénue.' (back

| Sunday
14th September 2008 - 7pm |
| Shelby
Lynne is an American country music singer, songwriter
and actress. She won a Grammy Award in 2001 for
Best New Artist. In 1998, Shelby released the
confessional and eclectic Rhythm and Blues album
I Am Shelby Lynne in 1999 (released in US in 2000)
to wide critical acclaim; on the strength of the
album Lynne won a Grammy award for "Best
New Artist", despite the fact that she had
been recording and releasing records for more
than ten years (which she referred to in her acceptance
speech). Her 2001 follow up album, Love, Shelby
featured a slicker, more pop-influenced sound.
This album was a moderate commercial success but
received mixed reviews. In 2003, Lynne released
the critically-acclaimed Identity Crisis. Though
not a commercial success, many magazines rated
the album among the best of 2003. 2005's Suit
Yourself has also been well received by critics.
Lynne's most recent album — Just a Little
Lovin', released on January 29, 2008 — is
a tribute to singer Dusty Springfield, which has
garnered favourable press as well.
