Wednesday 9th April to Saturday 24th May 2008 - 7.30pm
Starring Brenda Blethyn who is a BAFTA-award winner, a Golden Globe winner, and a two-time Oscar nominee. When her troubled son finally invites a workmate round for dinner, an overbearing mother sees a potential suitor for her shy daughter, and salvation for them all ... Amanda Wingfield (Brenda Blethyn) was the most popular girl in town with her pick of eligible bachelors – but she chose the wrong one. Now, years later, she is desperate for her two grown-up children to avoid her own mistakes. Dreaming of ways to improve the lot of a son who’s rarely home and a daughter who rarely isn’t, Amanda longs for a gentleman caller who can transform everything, in Tennessee Williams’ lyrical, tender and shattering masterpiece. Sunday 18th May 2008 - 7.30pm
A brand new show from award-winning Daniel Kitson, on his third visit to the Royal Exchange. The world is a saddening mess, of unfathomable complexity and the simplest cruelty. and yet, rather than raging or weeping, most of us still manage to eat snacks, do crosswords and occasionally wash. But what if, what if we heave our compassion from wherever its buried and with courage enough to seem naïve or underinformed or oblivious to futility, we reach for something better. Something more engaged, more humane and less snack based. An angry, frustrated and beautiul new show about wanting the world to change but not doing enough to change it. (back to top)

Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th May 2008
Presented by Unlimited Theatre. A mind melting, jargon free, whistle stop tour of leading edge Quantum Physics. Unlimited's artistic director Jon Spooner explains how in the course of researching material for their show Tangle, his understanding of the world and everything in it was radically altered by his conversations with Professor Vlatko Vedral who heads up the Quantum Information Group at the University of Leeds. No, really he does. By avoiding jargon and explaining in a straightforward terms the concepts of Superposition, Wave Particle Duality, Quantum Entanglemement, and Teleportation, The Ethics of Progress pushes theoretical physics into real life situations, and imagines the world as it might be in the not too distant future. Wednesday 4th to Saturday 21st June 2008
Based on a true story, DR KORCZAK'S EXAMPLE recounts the remarkable last days of Janusz Korczak, a children's author and paediatrician who founded a Jewish Orphanage in the shadow of the Warsaw Ghetto. Dr.Korczak created a radical environment for the young people in his care; a democratic utopia where children had rights and were treated as equals. As the summer of 1942 advances, the days of the Ghetto and the orphanage are numbered, pushing Korczak's pacifist ideals to the limit. But the doctor's principles are challenged not only by the advancing Nazi regime but by the arrival of Adzio, a young Jewish boy who believes in fighting back. (back to top)

Tuesday 1st July to Saturday 9th August 2008 - 7.30pm
When each member of an eccentric theatrical family invites a guest to stay with them without telling the other, the stage is set for a memorable and madcap weekend in the country. Retired actress Judith Bliss, her novelist husband David, and their two self-indulgent children Simon and Sorel are each looking forward to a weekend in the country with a potential romantic attachment of their choice. However, as each realises that the other has invited a guest of their own, and each couple treads on the others toes, the weekend quickly descends into a mass of mishaps and misunderstandings as The Bliss’s play a game from which their hapless guests are desperate to escape. One of the great comic creations in the history of theatre, a weekend with The Bliss’s proves to be unforgettable in Noel Coward’s much-loved classic. (back to top)

Presented by Royal Exchange Education. The Royal Exchange Community Partnerships programme creates theatre-based projects in partnership with community groups across Greater Manchester.
