Collective Workshops - Spring Summer 2023

THE YOUNG COLLECTIVE IS OUR MEMBERSHIP SCHEME WHICH GIVES YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 14-25 OPEN-ACCESS TO WORKSHOPS AT THE ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE

The YOUNG COLLECTIVE is a year long membership which allows you to book on to FREE or DISCOUNTED workshops such as:

Costume Design, Writing a Monologue, Performing Comedy, Sustainable Theatre Design, Directing New Writing, Movement Direction, Creating Solo Theatre, Autobiographical Writing, Stories Through Sound Design and more!

Our Collective workshops are typically weekdays from 6pm-8pm, but we also have longer projects during the half term to give members the opportunity to further develop their ideas and craft.

  • Movement Direction with Yandass Ndlovu
    Thursday 23 February, 10am - 3pm
  • In this workshop you will explore the ways of building an ensemble in a creative space. Using movement, exercises and explorations to help build trust, confidence within an ensemble and collaborative repertoires. You will do this through:

    - partner work
    - generating movement for small groups (which you will unpack further)
    - adapting exercises into scene work
    - responding to your performers and their natural movements

    Please note: this workshop will be highly physical. Please make sure to wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.

  • How to Work with Non-Professional Actors with Anna Berentzen
    Monday 6 March, 6pm - 8pm
  • This workshop is a chance for you to build your practical skill set for directing non-professional actors. We'll work practically to explore:

    - how to communicate your vision to actors with varying degrees of experience
    - tips, tricks, and games to help actors get out of their comfort zone and support them in finding their best performance
    - how you can create an accessible and inclusive rehearsal room

  • How to Pitch Your Own Show with Gitika Buttoo
    Wednesday 15 March, 6pm - 8pm
  • This workshop is a chance for you to learn how to use a fundamental toolkit for programming your own show. You will:

    - Have an opportunity to talk about what ideas you have for stories you want to tell/create some individually or in groups
    - Learn about ways to pitch a show to venues, what venues to pick and how to make it an attractive offer
    - Explore how your social media can help your sell. Have time to explore on your own or in groups a pitcher email to a venue of your choice


  • How to Run a Tech with Polly Wain
    Wednesday 22 March, 6pm - 8pm
  • In this workshop, you will be exploring the technical aspects of theatre making in the lead up to the run of a professional theatre production. You will have:

    - an insight into what a tech rehearsal is, why we have them, and how they work
    - a breakdown of who is involved in a tech rehearsal, what their roles are and the jobs they are completing
    - a backstage tour of areas of the theatre that are used in preparation for a tech rehearsal, during the tech rehearsals and across the run of a production


  • Devising from a Director's Perspective with Jonnie Riordan
    Monday 3 - Wednesday 5 April, 10am - 4pm
  • In these workshops, you will be exploring the role of a director in a collaborative/devised professional theatre production. You will have:

    - an insight into strategies for generating ideas and structuring them into creative tasks, starting points for devising and how to arrive at a process armed with inspirations
    - time to explore tasks/games for getting actors ready for creating work using warmups and focusing exercises
    - methods for generating text and scripts
    - methods for generating physical material for physical storytelling
    - the chance to lead your own creative work as part of the Directing module by putting your learning into practice

    Please note: this workshop is project-based. You must be available for all three dates in order to take part.
