“Into the Melting Pot”: Screening & Discussion

Songs and stories of women against the backdrop of 1492 Spain. Part of our Synagogue Scratch season. Spain, 1492. At twilight on her final night in Seville, a Jewish woman lights the lamps. She is being forced to leave Spain and set sail for an uncertain future. Her story echoes down the ages to the personal stories of people affected by politics and war today. She tunes into the voices of a community of Jewish, Christian and Muslim women from across the Spanish peninsula. Down the centuries, women?s stories of integration, love, the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish peninsula and racial intolerance are played out to a soundtrack of plaintive Sephardic songs and lively medieval music, with full staging and stunning lighting. Be transported back to 15th century Seville! Join us for a screening in our beautiful synagogue of Into the Melting Pot, a concertplay developed by groundbreaking theatre and music company The Telling. The film will be followed by a talk with creator Clare Norburn and flautist and teacher Sarah Atter, discussing the project and their recent workshops with the museum?s Songwriting Group. They tour high-quality, accessible and affordable music and theatre productions to places that are often missed out on touring circuits. They are also known for their special intimate performances of medieval and traditional carols and workshops. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The age guidance for this event is 16+. The doors to the museum will be open from 6PM on the day of the performance. The museum Cafe will be selling food as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Please note, that food and drinks cannot be taken into the synagogue space, so if you?d like to use the Caf? before the show, please allow yourself additional time. The screening will begin at 7pm and last for 1 hour. The screening will be followed by a discussion with creator Clare Norburn and flautist and teacher Sarah Atter. Please note, that this event takes place at our historic synagogue with on-side seating. The synagogue will have seating areas for those with accessibility needs to enjoy the performance. We are located on Cheetham Hill Road, just 15 minutes? walk from Manchester?s Victoria train station and 30 minutes? walk from Manchester City Centre.
