Helen Grime In Focus

Throughout the year, RNCM's In Focus series invites trailblazing composers to the college. Behind the scenes they work closely with staff and students, culminating in a compelling day of performances. This Spring they are delighted to welcome Helen Grime.

Taking inspiration from paintings and literature alike, she is renowned for her masterful compositional style and musical story telling.

The afternoon opens with a work for piano trio performed by students that takes its name from three chalk and pastel miniatures found on display in the Veronese Room of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.  

This intimate opening leads into a short study piece for solo trumpet that uses musical sketches from Helen’s Trumpet Concert, night-blue-sky before a new piece by RNCM composition student Audrey Lam.

Circling back to Helen’s love for the oboe, this performance concludes with her Oboe Quartet where she explores the relationship between the oboe and the unit of a string trio.
