The Dutch-American Richard Hageman (1881-1966) was celebrated in his lifetime as a pianist, conductor, and composer. He was most active as a composer of art songs and film music. While his songs are original compositions, Hageman often alludes to Romantic composers to create an easy connection point or establish a mood in his works. This talk will explore the ways in which Hageman used such allusions to great effect in his songs with some reference to his film scores.
