The Chosen Haram
The Chosen Haram uses circus, theatre and live art to tell the story of two gay men and their meeting through a dating app. One is bound by his teachings while the other lives a life of excess.
Something that is “Haram” is forbidden by Islam. The Chosen Haram explores themes of faith, sexuality, addiction and human connection. Blending exquisite Chinese pole skills with visual and physical theatre and a pumping soundtrack, it tells the story of two queer men, their chance meeting through a dating app and the social, cultural and personal barriers they desire to overcome in seeking happiness and fulfilment. The show is based on a combination of the lead artist’s personal experience as well as interviews with members of the LGBTQ+ community who identify as (ex) Muslim. It aims to highlight the personal struggles faced by people whose upbringing contradicts their personal truths and how this can lead to self-destructive behaviours. It aims to foster understanding of the issues faced by LGBTQ+ (ex) Muslims as well as celebrate their resilience. Lead artist Sadiq Ali is originally from Edinburgh and trained at the National Centre for Circus Arts in London; this is his first full-length piece.
