Three Colours: Red (15)

Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s celebrated psychological drama Three Colours Trilogy returns to the big screen, newly restored in 4K. Each film draws its title and palette from a colour of the French flag and explores, in rich and diverse ways, one of central tenets of the national motto: liberty, equality and fraternity.
Representing the culmination of Kieślowski’s remarkable filmmaking output from the late-80s to the mid-90s, Three Colours remains a touchstone of modern European cinema.
Starring Irène Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Jean-Pierre Lorit, the final instalment Red (from 1994) follows fashion model Valentine, who after accidentally running over a dog, she takes him to a vet, gets him patched up, and then tries to return him to his owner.
Valentine learns that the dog’s owner, Joseph Kern, is a retired judge who lives alone and listens in on his neighbours’ telephone conversations. The pair slowly become friends; meanwhile, nearby, a relationship between two of Joseph’s neighbours breaks down. Valentine repeatedly crosses paths, but never meets, the heart-broken young man – unaware that he will soon have an important impact on her life.
French with English subtitles.
