Three Colours: White (15)

Three Colours: White (15)

Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s celebrated psychological drama Three Colours Trilogy returns to the big screen, newly restored in 4K. Each film draws its title and palette from a colour of the French flag and explores, in rich and diverse ways, one of central tenets of the national motto: liberty, equality and fraternity.

Representing the culmination of Kieślowski’s remarkable filmmaking output from the late-80s to the mid-90s, Three Colours remains a touchstone of modern European cinema.

Zbigniew Zamachowski, Julie Delpy and Janusz Gajos star in the middle instalment from 1994, in which a Polish hairdresser living in Paris, finds himself living on the streets after being kicked out by his wife.

Whilst begging on the Metro, he is befriended by a fellow countryman, who agrees to smuggle him back to Warsaw in a trunk. Once home, he rebuilds his life, and, by cunning means, starts to make enormous profits in Poland’s new free-market system.

Putting his newly-acquired wealth to use, he enacts a complex plan to bring his wife back into his life.

In Polish and French with English subtitles.
