Blithe Spirit (Altrincham Garrick Production)
Perhaps Noël Coward’s most mature, best-constructed work, Blithe Spirit is certainly one of his funniest.
After a “spirited” séance goes decidedly wrong, Charles Condomine, a cantankerous novelist and socialite, suddenly finds himself face to face with the ghost of his deceased wife, Elvira…much to the annoyance of his current spouse, Ruth!
Even though only Charles can see and hear the spirit of Elvira, she finds ways to make her presence felt and show her contempt for her rival Ruth. As all three personalities clash, the supernatural love triangle leads to disastrous consequences.
Legend has it that Noël Coward wrote Blithe Spirit in six days on a trip to North Wales with his actress friend Joyce Carey in May 1941.
It opened a month later in Manchester and then at London’s Piccadilly Theatre, where it was an instant success, becoming one of the West End's longest-running shows.
An Altrincham Garrick production directed by Mike Shaw.
