The second part of Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy, released in 1983, once again sees the director collaborating with the great Antonio Gades.

Here, they bring Prosper Mérimée’s story of Carmen and Bizet’s operatic adaptation to the screen in a striking flamenco style.

As a company rehearses a production of Carmen, their own personal lives begin to echo that of the fictional characters they are creating for the stage.

A self-reflexive, cinematic tour de force, the film also boasts the presence of a number of flamenco greats including choreographer María Pagés, guitarist Paco de Lucía and dancer Cristina Hoyos.  

One of Spanish cinema’s great auteurs, Carlos Saura brought international audiences closer to the art of his country's dance than any other filmmaker, before or since.

In his Flamenco Trilogy—Blood Wedding, Carmen, and El amor brujo—Saura merged his passion for music with his exploration of national identity.

All starring and choreographed by legendary dancer Antonio Gades, the films feature thrilling physicality and electrifying cinematography and editing—colourful paeans to bodies in motion as well as to cinema itself.
