Noah Baumbach's 2012 black and white French New Wave-inspired film is a real joy to watch.
Greta Gerwig is charming as the titular Frances, an insecure aspiring dancer who struggles to cope when her best friend moves out of their cosy shared apartment to live with her boyfriend.
In a bid to reinvent herself, Frances embarks on a voyage of self-discovery that takes her across New York to find new friends and a new home, and across the Atlantic to Paris on a rather uneventful trip.
With an effortless balance between the cringing hilarity of Frances’ public faux pas and the profoundly touching and deep friendship Frances has with her friend Sophie, Noah Baumbach and co-writer Greta Gerwig have created an impressive grown up coming-of-age story.
