Placebo
Formed in London by androgynous American-Belgian vocalist Brian Molko and Swedish-Luxembourgish bass guitarist Stefan Olsdal, influential rock outift Placebo were darlings of David Bowie, Michael Stipe and others.
While the duo had both grown up in Luxembourg, where they both attended the American International School, they did not know each other until a chance encounter at South Kensington tube station in 1994, which lead to them starting Placebo with Northwich drummer Steve Hewitt, who would play with the band until 2007.
Compared by the New York Times to bands of the "first wave of post-punk rock, particularly New Order, the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, early U2 and Talking Heads," they are best known in the UK for their late 90's UK Top 10 hits "Every You Every Me", "Nancy Boy", "Pure Morning" and "You Don't Care About Us" which catipulated a career of international chart-topping music.
