Contemporary social-drama meets Gothic mystery, writer/director Paris Zarcilla’s thematically complex debut is a patiently told horror story that knows how to hook its audience from its playful opening to a shatteringly satisfying emotional conclusion.
Filipina housekeeper Joy, desperate to raise enough money to keep her and her daughter Grace in the UK, is hired to look after a country mansion by a woman who nurses her comatose uncle in one of the sprawling home’s many rooms.
The job should solve all of Joy’s problems, but instead it turns into a nightmare as her presence awakens age-old dark secrets.
