RNCM Symphony Orchestra - John Adams’ Harmonielehre

RNCM Symphony Orchestra - John Adams’ Harmonielehre

Surprisingly lyrical selections make way for one of John Adams’ most iconic works as The Royal Northern College of Music's Symphony Orchestra perform a rarely performed masterpiece, Harmonielehre, which shares its name with Arnold Schoenberg’s prolific study of tonal harmony published in 1911.

Listeners are taken on a harmonic expedition as Adams explores the sonic landscape of late Romanticism through the lens of minimalism.

Is it a symphony? Some would say yes others would say no. It is, however, a 40-minute suite in three movements, partly inspired by tonal philosophy, partly inspired by Adams’ dreams, and undoubtedly an incredible piece of music.

As we reflect on climate change and the natural world this year through The Future is Green, we’re also delighted to feature Tansy Davies’ re-greening. This colourful and playful piece focusses on the essence of spring and the cycles of forest life.
