Joe and Jerry are down on their luck jazz musicians who find themselves out of a job when the police raid the speakeasy they perform in. Things go from bad to worse when they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war and must go on the run after witnessing a mob hit.
With no money and nowhere to hide, a gig with Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopators seems like the perfect getaway plan: the band needs a saxophone and a double bass, and Joe and Jerry need to get out of the Chicago cold and evade the mobster heat.
