Performing all 69 songs, over two nights, from 1999's three-volume concept album, 69 Love Songs, album, the Boston, Massachusetts indie/electropop band are led by Stephin Merritt, who is known for his distinctive and untrained bass voice and ironic, tongue-in-cheek, bitter, and humorous lyrics about love and neutral gender roles.

Tracks from the album were notably covered by other artists, including "The Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel - which featured in the final episode of Scrubs, the 2004 movie Shall We Dance?, and the South Park episode "Tweek x Craig".

Taylor Hickinson covered the same song in the series Motherland: Fort Salem, while "Papa Was a Rodeo" was covered by Kelly Hogan and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, "My Only Friend" was covered by Deadsy and featured on the soundtrack for the 2005 film Winter Passing, and "I Think I Need a New Heart" was covered by Black Country, New Road.
