Six - The Lowry, Salford - Tuesday 2nd August 2022

Read what 11 year old, Georgia Horrocks had to say about SIX...

Since my mum went to see Six when it first came to The Lowry, she started playing the songs around the house. When I had heard these catchy lyrics and upbeat tunes, I instantly fell in love and wanted to see these songs being performed live. I had never managed to get tickets…until now. I was thoughtfully invited to see Six! At first hearing of this, I was buzzing with excitement because of how familiar I was with the music and the many amazing reviews I had heard. It truly was the opportunity of a lifetime for me.

On arrival at The Lowry, I loved seeing the many fans who gathered in one place to enjoy the wonderful music and comedy of this musical. There were first time watchers and sixth time watchers but, needless to say, we all enjoyed it the same.

Catherine of Aragon played by Chlöe Hart was funny and upbeat. She was a strong presence on stage even when she wasn’t the main focus, and you could see how much fun she was having as an actor. Her effort in the dancing she did was impeccable, I really liked it. I loved her singing and the way she brought her own style into her part. She really let the character grow and develop as we watched on, and we saw Catherine of Aragon appear on the stage before our eyes.

Anne Boleyn played by Jennifer Caldwell was a great addition to the cast of Six. She was funny, sassy and portrayed Anne Boleyn perfectly. This is hard to do as it is such an in-depth character, but Jennifer was great at this. Her singing was amazing and the dancing she did was very good. The way she moved was flexible and fluid.

Jane Seymour played by Casey Al-Shaqsy was a great singer and was amazing at playing her part, getting into the zone of Jane. Her facial expressions were amazing and even though she had no comedic side I still enjoyed her performance. She interacted well with the other characters and she made sure to be her character and not follow with other people.

Anne of Cleves played by Jessica Niles was just who I imaged Anne of Cleves to be to be, strong, powerful and individual and she added her own touch to each song she sung. I thoroughly liked the show she put on for us, the dancing and the music and the way she put on a great musical show. She was a fantastic member of the cast I would love to see her in other shows.

Katherine Howard played by Leesa Tully was sassy, moody, sarcastic and funny. She was always dancing to the full and I loved watching the way she danced and moved around so energetically.  Her character was brought to life, and I really loved seeing it happen. I was amazed seeing her perform to such a high standard.

Catherine Parr played by Alana M Robinson was a passionate dancer and played well to her character and used her look to develop the member of Six she was playing. Her singing was beautiful to listen to and she was a perfect fit for Catherine Parr in my mind. The cast were all great, but Alana was just amazing for her difficult role. Catherine Parr was a very in-depth person and Alana was fantastic carrying out each layer.

When I arrived at The Lowry, I loved how kind and welcoming the staff were. They helped us find what we needed although it was hard. This was a great way to start off my adventure and to get me in the mood for a fabulous musical.

The program was amazingly set out and included the information we needed and more. I very much enjoyed reading about the actors and the colours, pictures and high quality made the program really interesting.

When I entered the theatre and saw the set my mind was blown. It looked absolutely astonishing. Tudor music was playing in the background, which really set the mood and was surprisingly upbeat. As soon as I looked at the stage, I knew that Six would be uplifting. The stage was blocked by purple curtains with dazzling gold medieval swirls. This made the first impression much more positive. Clearly this wasn’t enough as there was also a purple and black cow print type pattern on the walls.

The actors came out with lots of intensity, and it added so much to the feel of the play when we couldn’t see their faces. It was so good, and the darkness made it 100% better. I loved the first part as that was the moment I knew I was in for a ride. Then, the music started and the theatre thrived with life. So many people were mouthing along or copying the moves. It felt wonderful to be witnessing the cast have so much fun and so many smiles on their faces when the music had its big break.

The actors weren’t the only ones onstage because we cant possibly forget about the tremendous band members, who got several mentions as they should. The musicians were fabulous. I loved seeing them play on the stage and it worked fantastically well promoting girl power themes since they were all female. They created an undeniable positive atmosphere on the stage.

Often, after each song, a short, funny bit of dialogue took place. This was such an amazing addition and I thought it really showed us how, although so different, each wife had one thing in common, Henry VIII. Those short snippets of dialogue created more communication and interaction between us and the cast, it made me feel involved and more connected to the story.

I’m sure most people are aware of the modern twist to Six but it really shows through when you go and see it. Everything they do is modern or has a modern theme. Surprisingly, this doesn’t ruin the Tudor feel to it though. This is really hard to do and I think that it is a skill to be able to do this.

I think its time for me to say a massive thank you to the creators of this marvellous musical and to say that they are geniuses. THANK YOU TOBY MARLOW AND LUCY MOSS!! You deserve all the positive comments you receive. Congratulations on the success you have had!
