(excerpts) Performers Campbell Diamond guitar About Part of Inspirational Artists One of the leading guitarists of his generation, Australian-born Campbell Diamond has earned top prizes at over 30 international competitions. Now based in Vienna and having performed extensively across Europe, Diamond channels this experience into a programme that takes listeners on a musical journey across the continent. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco uses selected pictures from Spanish painter Francisco Goya?s 80 etchings, Los Caprichos, as inspiration for his guitar cycle. Created at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment, Goya?s works sharply critique the darker aspects of society, exploring themes of corruption, superstition, and greed. From Spain to Dresden, Weiss? L?Infid?le, written for baroque lute, is one of only two sonatas by the composer to have been given a poetic title. Translating to The Infidel, this work features bell-like sonorities and culminates in a bold, triumphant finale. Fantasia on Themes from Verdi?s La traviata takes us across to 19th century Paris, weaving listeners through the story of the protagonist Violetta and her developing romance with Alfredo, before the relationship faces external pressures, leading her to tragic demise. Premiered in Berlin by Julian Bream in 1976, Hans Werner Henze?s Royal Winter Music draws inspiration from the characters of Shakespeare: Ophelia, Lady Macbeth, and Richard III are all vividly brought to life. Werner Henze writes that the characters ?enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were a curtain? speaking ?of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy?. Our Inspirational Artists series is graciously support by The Haworth Trust. Photo credit: Bridget Elliot Tickets Full Price ?18 Student/Under 26 ?12 Promoted by RNCM.
