Concord Brass Band, Denmark?s first brass band founded in 1957, takes its name from the word concord, symbolising harmony, cooperation, and joy. Performing in the British brass band tradition, the ensemble has long celebrated its strong ties with the UK, regularly working with British guest conductors while simultaneously championing music by Danish composers. Fittingly, the programme opens with an arrangement of Danish composer Carl Nielsen?s Dance of the Cockerels from his opera Maskarade. Though the opera itself is seldom performed, this spirited piece from Act III has become one of Nielsen?s most popular concert works and is a lively depiction of cockerels strutting proudly among clucking hens. The dialogue between Danish and British styles continues in Per N?rg?rd?s Doing, which explores the intersection of the two traditions through three inventive variations on the Beatles song You Can?t Do That. Distinguished trombone soloist Jesper Juul Windahl then takes centre stage in Launy Gr?ndahl?s powerful and dramatic Trombone Concerto, a work originally inspired by the trombone section of Copenhagen?s Casino Theatre Orchestra. A rare gem by Hilda Sehested, one of the few women composing during Denmark?s Romantic era, follows before the concert concludes with Frederik Magle?s vividly descriptive portrayal of the 1801 Battle of Copenhagen.
