On Tuesday, we were invited to Lowry, Salford to see The Diana Mixtape. Read what our reviewer Abi Holden had to say about this super production...

The People’s Princess has come to Lowry with The Diana Mixtape, a love letter to the late ex-royal in the most fabulous way possible. Created and directed by Christopher D. Clegg, this show is everything I thought it would be and more. Before seeing this show, and knowing who was involved, I had very high expectations and I certainly was not disappointed.

Diana herself is played by 5 notorious queens in their own right, Courtney Act (We Will Rock You; Death Drop), Divina De Campo (Spongebob Squarepants the Musical; Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Priyanka (Canada’s Drag Race; We’re Here), Rosé (Titanique; The Wizard of Oz) and Kitty Scott-Claus (Death Drop; Death Drop 2: Back in the Habit). These global Drag Race alumni bring this amazing show to life. The show itself is like if Six and & Juliet had a baby and threw in a load of drag. It’s camp, clever and insanely creative. From their first meeting to the end in Paris, the queens take us on the ‘factual’ journey of Diana’s life. With the upbeat pop songs of now and the addition of Charles, played by Noel Sullivan (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; School of Rock), and Camilla, played by Lucinda Lawrence (9 to 5; On The Town). The late Queen Elizabeth II was played by international superstar Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman; Waitress) who sang a wonderfully hilarious rendition of Meghan Trainor’s Mother in the most perfect way. Seeing the Queen sing that song made so much sense. It was fabulous.

The set was simple but certainly effective, with a large screen portraying different backdrops, highlighting certain words in songs and bringing the whole piece together. One particular stand-out moment for me is when Rosé was portraying Diana and the dancers were dressing her, ready for the wedding. A video image of the real Diana was projected onto the white dress, which I thought was a beautiful moment. It reminded the audience that the show was a homage to a real person.

Courtney Act was brilliant, bringing her Aussie charm to the People’s Princess. Her vocals were stunning and the cheeky nature of her Diana had the audience in stitches. Divina de Campo is a powerhouse, in singing, dancing and acting and her Diana voice was perfect. She lit up the stage with her presence and I found myself drawn to her. I enjoyed her performance immensely. Priyanka brought a sultry charm to the ex-royal. A particular highlight of the show, for me, from her was the power walk, in heels, on a treadmill. I can’t even walk in heels on flat ground that isn’t moving so I was in awe. Rosé has a voice like no other. She charmed the entire audience. She gave ‘mindful’ and ‘demure’ to the Princess of Wales. I sat basking in her vocal performance with a beaming smile on my face. Last, but certainly not least, Kitty Scott-Claus made the young Diana come alive in front of us. She is a beauty and a fantastic singer and portrayed the shyness and naivety of a young Diana perfectly.

Noel Sullivan
was hilarious. He embodied our current monarch from his head to his toes. The walk, the voice and the mannerisms were perfectly on point. His singing was amazing (as can be expected from a former member of the band Hear’Say). Lucinda Lawrence as Camilla was just hilarious. The way she sang and danced, with a cigarette hanging out her mouth and the posh drawl of the upper classes, was phenomenal. Being about Diana, she was the villain of the story, but you couldn’t help but love her. She was just so funny. Keale Settle is a musical theatre legend and powerhouse and she definitely didn't disappoint. She portrayed the late Queen with grace and hilarity. Her vocals, live, are so mesmerising. I feel lucky and privileged to have seen such a talented person in the flesh.

If you like drag, musical theatre and pop songs, this is the perfect combination of all three. I loved every second of the show, from the upbeat numbers to the ballad-type solos. There were references to other musicals and pop culture moments and, as an audience member, you could tell that the cast themselves were having a blast performing this show. That kind of energy is infectious and the audience clapped and sang along (when prompted) with gusto.

The Diana Mixtape
is only at Lowry for a limited time, until 21st August, so get your tickets whilst you can. You certainly can’t miss this comical, jukebox one-act wonder for a night that you’ll never forget. I certainly won’t forget those union flag underpants for a long time.
